Smelly diapers in a food line

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

The scent of a disposable diaper needed is one that’s not easily forgotten, seeming to linger and stay within the nostrils unwanted.

When someone’s in need of one they’re immediate need or reason isn’t really considered that much. If anything they might get quicker service, but getting help with what is sometimes a required medical need isn’t going to be found in most shelters.

If you’re a service provider and wondering what you can do to help stop the smell…try putting up a sign that says “Do you need help with adult diapers?”.

If you don’t offer, they won’t know you can help.

Swiss Army Is Not Just About Knives

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Hey, when you’re homeless you don’t have time or finances to invest in ‘all that’. Your on a mission, your surviving, and it’s down and dirty.

Before you or your family becomes homeless, consider checking out the functionality of some Swiss Army luggage. Not only will you be accessorizing for today, you’ll be preparing for an unplanned future, no matter what it brings tomorrow!

"Why don’t you have more sites on your blog for homeless…?"

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

That was a good question that was posed to me in an email just recently.

To the right on the sidebar are links to the services I; and my family jointly; used while entering and exiting the homeless experience directly. Absence of any service provider doesn’t mean they’re of lesser value. It means I don’t have direct knowledge as a consumer of their service, or I don’t have an open relationship enough to know what’s going on behind their doors.

That’s not a slam. It’s reality. If I became involved directly with an agency enough to advocate to other consumers that they’re in fact a service I’d have my family directly involved in, then they’d be added. This could range from involvement or on site inspection of the facility or services provided, but without firsthand seeing what’s going on…I don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors.

I invite ANY service provider to contact me if they’d like to be included as a featured location in my sidebar as a resource to people experiencing homelessness.

Reading By PDA Light

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

One of the things I found cool once I got my PDA Christmas before last, was getting classic Sci Fi books for it. You’d be surprised what’s considered public domain now, and worth a few minutes to check in to. Look for twenty five of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ books there!

Portable Applications On A USB Stick

Monday, January 15th, 2007

I’m a major user of Firefox and Thunderbird on a stick. There’s only one problem…speed.

If you haven’t already, move the entire application folder on your USB stick to your ‘Recovery’ partition. Seems the safest place to me in the event of a major hosier to your OS. Create a briefcase folder on the USB, and drop same folder in that. You’ll always have the ability to sync for BOTH archive backups, as well as having all your browser stuff on the go.

So far in all trials using either, I haven’t had a problem as long as I remember to sync the files first before using either one…the original or it’s clone. Anyone having knowledge of problems or experience doing this, please let me know.

Disclaimer: I’m mentally ill. Don’t blame me if you lose everything. Yuck yuck.

It Knows When You Are Sleeping…

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

If you’ve got a cellphone and you’re reading this; sheltered or not; there was something that happened to me on Christmas Day that many people could have used with the tornadoes that hit a number of homes out towards Lake City. Why I didn’t think of it earlier, I don’t know.

When I was laying down, I was abruptly awakened from my slumber not by little hooves, but a bell…from my cellphone. I’d recently set my AOL Alerts to give me ‘Weather Alerts’ based on my zip code.

If you’ve got a cellphone, I urge you to check out AOL Alerts. Normally I don’t plug anything that I wouldn’t use. I used it, it worked, period.

It’s easier to program in your cell phone number, than having to give your cell phone’s email/SMS address that many of the local news media sites use in their weather alerts, let alone find on their site WHERE that kind of service is.

Urban Nomad Shelter

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Electroland’s got a neat project going on. These ‘coccoons’ reportedly cost $24 to manufacture…according to gossip on the net, so don’t take my word for it. The possibilities are endless, when compared to what you can do with cardboard!

Oh, and before you go asking…I already put in to the company to see if I could get one or more for field testing. It’d be cool to see how they really stand up in regular use in the field…no pun intended.
